The idea of building a new capital city had been a topic of discussion ever since the Republic of Brazil was founded in 1891 but the present site was not chosen until 1957. Thus the “planned city” of Brasilia came to be on a central plateau 1,200 km from Rio. The prestige buildings, including the cathedral, were designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Curved concrete supports and windows in honeycomb design enclose a simple interior which is reached via an underground entrance. Our model shows the cathedral, bell tower and baptistery. The group of statues in front of the entrance depicts the four evangelists.
