Unfortunately, farmhouse mills have disappeared almost entirely from the Carinthian landsca-pe. In bygone times they were scattered throughout the mountainous valleys in particular and almost every largish farm had its own mill. Economic and technical developments, electrification in particular, put an end to the mills’ usefulness and many fell into disrepair. The basis for our model is a well-preserved mill in the Lesachtal valley. Two water wheels, each with their own headrace, drive the wooden machinery for two sets of milling courses. The lower stone is fixed while the upper mill stone rotates, thus
grinding.
