In the 16th century, under Emperor Charles V, the precursor of today’s university was founded. In 1950, the new construction was begun and involved over 100 architects. Nowadays it is home to some 300,000 students. The ten-storey library building is the work of Juan O’Gorman and was completed in 1956.
