In the 16th century, under Emperor Charles V, the precursor of today’s university was found­­ed. In 1950, the new construction was begun and involved over 100 architects. Nowadays it is home to some 300,000 students. The ten-storey library building is the work of Juan O’Gorman and was completed in 1956.
